Giving horses a safe haven

In 2014, Happy Tails Haven became a registered 501(c)(3) charity to provide a permanent home for the elderly and extensive special needs horses. We also have available a select few adoptable horses. We are located on the 20-acre CoDreLea Farm near the Black Hills. We promote responsible equine ownership and continue community efforts to enrich the animal-human friendship bond. We provide loving care, proper medical treatment, individual nutritional needs and daily handling. Our goal is to prepare the horses for permanent placement.
ORGANIZATIONS WE ARE MEMBERS OF

The Full Circle of Life Shelter Network is a program of Horse Plus Humane Society that connects and supports equine rescues dedicated to helping horses of all ages, conditions, and backgrounds. Unlike traditional rescues that often focus only on the most adoptable animals, the Full Circle Network embraces the belief that every horse deserves compassion and care—whether healthy, injured, untrained, or elderly. The network provides resources, mentoring, and grant opportunities to shelters that uphold high standards of care and transparency, creating a unified system of support for equine welfare organizations. Through its national directory, the Full Circle of Life Shelter Network promotes collaboration among rescues, encourages accountability, and ensures that more horses receive the second chances they deserve.
The United Horse Coalition (UHC), a program of the American Horse Council, is a collaborative national effort dedicated to helping at-risk and transitioning horses through education, outreach, and resource sharing. Formerly known as the Unwanted Horse Coalition, UHC broadened its mission to focus on prevention—supporting horse owners and the equine industry in making responsible, informed decisions before a horse’s situation becomes critical. The coalition provides extensive educational materials, maintains a nationwide resource database for assistance programs, and collects welfare data through the Equine Welfare Data Collective to better understand and address challenges facing horses in need. By uniting rescues, industry professionals, and advocates, the United Horse Coalition works to ensure every horse has access to safety, care, and humane solutions throughout all stages of life.

The Homes for Horses Coalition (HHC) is a national network of more than 500 equine rescues, sanctuaries, and advocates working together to improve the welfare of horses, donkeys, and mules across the United States. Founded in 2007 by the Animal Welfare Institute and American Wild Horse Conservation, the coalition promotes collaboration, professionalism, and advocacy within the equine rescue community. Its mission centers on ending horse slaughter, preventing abuse and neglect, and ensuring that every equine has access to safe, permanent care. HHC provides resources such as educational materials, training, networking opportunities, and operational guidance to strengthen rescue and sanctuary standards. By uniting diverse organizations under shared values and best practices, the Homes for Horses Coalition helps create a more compassionate and effective national system for protecting and rehoming equines in need.
